Food Safety

We take the safety and quality of our raw pet food seriously. All of our products are made in a USDA-inspected facility, where we follow strict food safety, sanitation, and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) to ensure consistent quality. These rigorous standards help guarantee that every batch of pet food we produce is safe and wholesome for your pets.

To further enhance product safety, we use bacteriophages specifically designed to target harmful bacteria such as Salmonella, E. coli, and Listeria. This advanced food-safety intervention is applied to all of our frozen raw meals and allows us to maintain the integrity of raw nutrition while meeting the highest safety standards. In addition, we follow a strict Test & Hold program, meaning no product is released to market until it has been confirmed free of pathogens.

Thank you for trusting us with your pet's nutrition.

Do You HPP Your products?

As a raw pet food manufacturer, we choose not to use High Pressure Processing (HPP) because it does not align with our commitment to preserving the natural integrity of raw nutrition. While HPP is effective at reducing pathogens, it uses extreme pressure that can negatively impact the natural structure of proteins, enzymes, and beneficial bacteria that make raw food biologically appropriate and beneficial for pets.

Instead, we utilize a bacteriophage-based food safety process, which is a highly targeted, FDA-approved technology widely used in the human food industry. Bacteriophages are naturally occurring organisms that selectively target and eliminate specific harmful bacteria such as Salmonella, E. coli, and Listeria—without affecting beneficial bacteria, enzymes, or the nutritional profile of the food.

Unlike HPP, bacteriophages:

  • Do not alter taste, texture, color, or moisture content

  • Do not compromise raw enzymes or protein structures

  • Work only on pathogenic bacteria, leaving beneficial microflora intact

  • Allow the food to remain truly raw and minimally processed

By pairing bacteriophage intervention with strict USDA oversight, GMP controls, and a Test & Hold program, we achieve a high level of food safety without sacrificing raw nutritional value. This approach allows us to deliver raw pet food that is both safe and biologically appropriate—staying true to what raw feeding is intended to be.

Totally Raw Co's 2lb rolls will thaw in the refrigerator within 8 -15 hours. You may thaw half the roll and refreeze/ refrigerate the rest. Discard any leftover refrigerated raw meat after three days. Meals can be frozen for up to 18 months without any change in quality if meat is kept in an airtight sealed container or bag.

How many days' notice do I need to give for new orders?

We ask that you place orders six business days prior to needing food. As a company, we take 2-3 business days to process orders before shipping.

My package is delayed, what do I do?

We apologize for the inconvenience. While shipping delays are outside of our control, we recommend contacting FedEx or UPS directly for additional information regarding the delay. Please inform them that the shipment contains perishable items and requires prompt delivery.

My package arrived Defrosted / Thawed; what do I do?

My Green Tripe looks diffeent than my last order. is this normal? What color is it supposed to be ? How many colors are there of  Green Tripe?

True green tripe is not cleaned or bleached (unlike white tripe for human consumption).
Because it is left in its natural state, color variation is expected and desirable.

Green tripe is the unaltered stomach lining of a ruminant animal and still contains digestive enzymes and plant material.

  • Bright green / olive tones → grass-fed or pasture-raised diets

  • Brown or tan tones → mixed feed or grain-finished diets

  • Grayish tones → lighter plant matter or seasonal diet changes

Different farms, regions, and seasons naturally produce color variation.

Will my dog become vicious and kill animals when he starts eating raw dog food?

Here is a common myth: feeding dogs a raw diet does not make them aggressive or dangerous toward people. While dogs may become more enthusiastic about their food and display natural food-protective instincts, a properly trained and socialized dog will not become aggressive based on diet alone, regardless of what they are fed.

What type of meat do you use in Totally Raw Co's raw dog food?

All of our meat is sourced from USDA certified and inspected facilities. We only use meat and poultry suitable for human consumption. We formulated these meals ourselves without the use of preservatives, grains, and fillers.

What is seaweed kelp and why should I feed it to my pet?

Seaweeds are large marine algae primarily found and cultivated in the Mediterranean Sea, as well as the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. They are highly nutritious and rich in potassium, iron, calcium, magnesium, 21 amino acids, simple and complex carbohydrates, and more than 50 essential minerals and trace elements. Their naturally high iodine content supports healthy glandular function in pets, including the pituitary and adrenal glands. When added to a balanced, nutritious diet, seaweed supplementation may contribute to reduced tartar buildup, a shinier coat, and improved stool quality.

How do I switch to a raw dog food diet?

There are two common methods for transitioning your dog to a raw diet: a “cold turkey” switch or a gradual transition.

Cold Turkey Method:
This approach involves stopping kibble entirely and feeding raw meals starting on day one. Some owners choose to include a short fasting day between kibble and raw to help clear the dog’s system; a brief fast will not harm a healthy dog, as dogs naturally may go a day or two without food in the wild. During the first week, it is best to feed only one protein source. For example, if you begin with a chicken meal, continue feeding chicken for the full week to ensure your dog tolerates it well before introducing another protein, such as beef.
Puppies can be switched using the same method. Because they have had limited exposure to different foods, they often transition more easily. Puppies should be fed three meals per day until approximately six months of age.

Gradual Transition Method:
Begin by feeding a mixture of 80% your dog’s current food and 20% raw food. Gradually increase the amount of raw food each day while decreasing the current food until the meal is fully raw. This process typically takes between 2 and 15 days. Temporary changes such as mild stool inconsistencies, food refusal, or occasional vomiting may occur and are generally normal during the transition. If symptoms persist for more than six days, consult a holistic veterinarian.

Can I cook the bones?

Raw bones are soft enough to be safely chewed and digested and do not require cooking unless they are being used solely for broth. Cooking bones is not recommended, as cooked bones splinter more easily and can pose a serious safety risk.

Why should I switch my dog to a raw dog food diet?

Raw foods are what dogs are designed to eat. Raw foods are full of enzymes, protein, vitamins, minerals and essential fatty acids. Our meal was intended to stick to their ancestral diet, which dogs thrived on years ago, leading them to have a longer lifespan than dogs today by 15 years.

I just made the switch to a raw dog food diet and my dog won't eat. What should I do?

This is common in dogs that have been fed a highly processed diet for an extended period of time. In many cases, the dog is simply unfamiliar with raw food, which has far less odor than kibble that contains added flavorings. Using a short fasting period, as mentioned earlier, can help clear kibble from the system and encourage interest in raw food. A brief fast will not harm a healthy dog, as dogs naturally may go a day or two without food after an unsuccessful hunt.

To further encourage eating, you can add green tripe to the meal or use meal toppers such as smelt, chicken feet, or other fresh treats your dog enjoys.

Why are my dog's stools smaller while I am eating raw dog food?

Dogs are able to metabolize up to 95% of the nutrients in a raw diet, meaning very little is left unused. This efficiency is reflected in smaller stool size and indicates that dogs are receiving complete nutrition rather than unnecessary fillers. Because a raw diet produces less waste in the digestive system, stools are typically firmer, smaller, and less odorous.

Can I chop up vegetables or give them chunks of the vegetable whole?

Yes! Yes! Yes! Vegetables safe for dogs can be fed whole, raw, or cooked. Stick to about 7 %per meal as anything more will be passed to the stool and not digested. You can also check out our beef/veggie blend that contains veggies as 5% in the formulation

Should I feed my dog Grains?

In our view, grains are not a natural or species-appropriate part of a dog’s diet. Carnivores do not actively seek out grains in the wild. While dogs are capable of digesting certain grains, we believe more biologically appropriate food choices better support their nutritional needs.

Why are the color and texture of Totally Raw blends inconsistent from batch to batch?

Color and texture variations are not indicators of a batch issue or quality concern. Our products are made by grinding whole animal components, which naturally vary in composition with each load we receive. To meet formulation requirements, different muscle meats may be used, which can result in variations in color—from deeper reds to lighter pinks—depending on whether cuts such as thighs or hearts are included. These variations do not affect nutritional value.

We do not use synthetic additives, dyes, or preservatives to standardize appearance between batches. Such ingredients would be required to be disclosed on the ingredient panel, and we do not consider them necessary for a fresh, minimally processed diet.

Do the patties contain different ingredients than the 2 lb roll?

No, the patties contain the SAME  ingredients as the 2 lb roll blends.

Why does is my dogs stool smaller than normal and turn white ?

Dogs fed a raw diet are able to digest raw food and its high meat content more efficiently than kibble, allowing them to absorb up to 90% of the meal’s available nutrients. Because less material is wasted during digestion, stools are typically smaller and firmer.

In simple terms:
A low-quality diet = large, messy stools
A nutritious, balanced diet = smaller, healthier stools
